E-Bike Spotters guide: Didn't make the cut.

If you happen to pick up the National Post this weekend there's an article about the different types of people you'll see riding e-scooters. Richard Johnson, Mike Faille and I designed a bunch of different characters for the graphic unfortunately not every character made the final image. Below find my favorites of the guys I drew who didn't end up in the final:

It happens sometimes. They were fun to draw and it was a nice change of pace from the usual stuff we do.

I really wish Lord Humongous ended up in the paper, would have been funny.

FANEXPO 2012: August 23–26

Hey guys, I'll be in Artist alley at this year's FanExpo in Toronto. As you can see from that map I'll be sitting at table A53 with the fantastic Leigh Young. We'll be selling art prints and art books and comics and stuff. Swing by and pick up some stuff to make your walls less boring.

And for the first time this year I'll have 5X7 postcard sized prints of 25 of my favourite Monstars, many of which are not on this poster.

I'll also have my art book, some comics and a few other bits of art. So swing by and say "hello". We'll be there the WHOLE convention. If I'm not at my table its probably because I'm trying to get John Carpenter's autograph or something but I'm never gone for too long. 

In Space ...

This is a wallpaper sized variation on something I did for the National Post for the cover of the Movies section for the release of PROMETHEUS. Click that Prometheus link to see what the version they ran in the paper looked like.

Detail of the Star Wars piece I did for the National Post today you can see the whole thing at the National Post website. I had fun drawing this up. Like I said before I'm surprised this is one of the very few Star Wars pieces I've ever done. Hope you guys like it.

I must really like John Carpenter movies...

Just judging by the number of John Carpenter movies I've done Monstars of. Since I did a new one today (Dave Lo Pan) I figure I'd post them all here for your convenience or something. Enjoy!

Sometimes it takes a while...

So you probably saw the illustration I did for the front of the NATIONAL POST. While that illo was pretty awesome, it wasn't the first one I did for the story. Since they weren't used I'll show you the other illos I did that ended up not being exactly what the designer/art director were looking for.  It happens sometimes, but very rarely do you end up with a bunch of art you really like. Everyone was happy with every version of what you see here but for some reason they just weren't working. That big eye at the top of this post was the first version. They ended up suggesting the image needed a more "High-tech, computery look" so I did this version.

I had a lot of fun playing with gradients. Stylistically I don't tend to use gradients that often in illustrator, I don't know why but I like the more flat shading look I usually use when working in illustrator. But again for whatever reason it didn't quite match the designer's vision. She wanted something with a little more Propaganda poster flavor to it. So I worked out these variations.

Everyone was happy with these but again something didn't quite line up with the vision the designer had, and since I was having fun exploring the idea we went with one more idea. Based on that final pair of blue eyes we decided to go with a more "Big Brother" idea and ended up with what you saw on the front of the paper and if you followed that link to the article.
