Jimmy Calabrese's Trailer Park Paranormal Investigators: The Sleepwalking Corpse

I was recently commissioned to do the cover art for Jimmy Calabrese of the phenomenal Rock 'n' Roll band Calabrese's short story The Sleepwalking Corpse. It's the first in a series of stories written by Jimmy. Above you can see the original ink drawing I produced for the image. Below is the final coloured version with the text and other important things added. I'm really happy with how it turned out so I figured I'd share it with all of you.

The Talisman of the Three Eyed Skull

A reproduction of the strange talisman originally described in the pages of the infamous book, "Notchordamnatchoz." The book claims The skull with "one eye for seeing, one eye for looking and one eye for watching" will protect the bearer from harm from the creatures thought to roam the spaces between what is known and what is unknown.
I have prepared 25 copies of this talisman to be included with the first 25 copies of my new art book, The Unnatural Order of the Three Eyed Skull which will be available at table A70 in artist alley during FanExpo in August. This is the first time in I don't know how long that I produced any art through lino-print. I had forgotten how much work it was. In the end I think it turned out pretty well. You end up with som pretty interesting textures in the final that are hard to get in any other media. I've always preferred screen printing when making prints of my work but I don't really have the space required for that kind of thing. one day I hope to get back into it but until then everything's going to be printed digitally or the occasional lino print.

I'm really looking forward seeing the whole package put together (book, print and little band that holds the print in the book) should be pretty cool.

He's got a lot on his mind. I think my favorite thing about this guy is the stitches going around the sides of his head.

I was recently asked to be part of Strange Kids Club and Scabfarm's weird virtual trading card project Closet Monsters. Since I've always been a fan of monsters and weird trading cards from the 80s I could not resist! Here's my first entry into the mayhem. Here's a little peek at the next four monstars showing up on the Monstar's blog. Any guesses as to where these guys and girl are from? The one in the upper right is already on that blog. The other three will be up over the next three weeks.

That guy from the puzzlebox, Pinhead

A group of my friends (My Ghoul Friday, Leigh Young and Mike Faille) have been slowly working our way through the Hellraiser movies. The strange thing is none of us think the movies are particularly good, but they're fun to watch with friends who share that sentiment. We've only made it through the first three so far. One of the things we've notice from the first two flicks is that Pinhead is not particularly good at his job. In the first movie Frank Cotton some how escapes the clutches of Pinhead and his Cenobite gang. When they encounter Frank's niece, Kristy, she convinces them to leave her alone because she can lead them to Frank. In the second movie they encounter Kristy in hell, she convinces Pinhead to leave her alone once again because she opened the puzzle box "accidentally." The creatively named female Cenobite, Female Cenobite, points out to Pin that it seems weird they keep "accidentally" running into Kristy and maybe they should tear her soul apart like they're supposed to. Tearing souls apart when people open the puzzle box is, after all, the only thing the Cenobites are supposed to do. Pinhead tells her "No we only do that to people who open the puzzle box on purpose."
Female counters with "don't you think its weird that in two movies we meet up with this Kristy person twice?" Pinhead just kinda shrugs and says "Hey it's not my problem, she says she didn't know what would happen if she solved the box. Let's let her off with a warning this time."
AND THEY DO!?
In the third movie Pinhead needs a certain number of victims in order to free himself from some goofy looking sculpture, long goofy story which I'm not going to relate at this time. He gets a guy to provide him with almost the number he needs.
Pinhead is one victim away from freedom but can't figure out that if he just kills the guy providing his victims he's free to go about his Hellraising ways.
It ends up the last victim the guy was going to bring to Pinhead kills that guy. Fortunately for Pinhead the last almost victim is dumb enough he can convince her to give him the dead victim provider thus freeing himself.

Anyway if you are a fan of the Hellraiser movies, could you please explain to me why they are so well loved? Is part four so amazing that they really needed to make four more after that one? Is all the love for Hellraiser based on the fact that the Cenobites in the first two flicks look kind of cool?

I'm sure some other horror franchises are more deserving of the love Hellraiser receives. Maybe we'll understand once we've made it to the end of the series.
Something tells me we won't.

Art Sale! Art Sale! Commissions for November!

Hi Guys and Gals,
I had a bunch of fun doing those Monsters all through October so I figured it might be fun to do some more of that style art. Therefore for the foreseeable future I'll be offering some quick commissions.

What am I charging for these commissions?
 • $25 (payable through Paypal) for a high resolution .jpg (or if you want .tif) emailed to you. Perfect for printing on your own! This is the quickest way to get the art to you!
 • If you want the actual physical piece of art it'll cost $50 to cover shipping. Not sure how long it will take to get to you, it'll be shipped flat through Canada Post.
 • $5 per additional character.

What kind of art am I doing?
 • Single character images with minimal background also known as a big blob. Similar to the monsters   I'd been doing through out October.

 • The physical image will be Black ink and one other color ink on smooth 150 lb bristol board 9"x 12"
 • If you have something more complex in mind we can discuss.
 • Fan art and original characters are fine, not really sure what else you'd be commissioning me to do otherwise.
 • Art is intended for private collections.

E-Bike Spotters guide: Didn't make the cut.

If you happen to pick up the National Post this weekend there's an article about the different types of people you'll see riding e-scooters. Richard Johnson, Mike Faille and I designed a bunch of different characters for the graphic unfortunately not every character made the final image. Below find my favorites of the guys I drew who didn't end up in the final:

It happens sometimes. They were fun to draw and it was a nice change of pace from the usual stuff we do.

I really wish Lord Humongous ended up in the paper, would have been funny.
