LASERS!

Just felt like drawing this. I don't know who she is. Why she's blinded. Where those guns came from or anything. She just fell out of my pencil when I was doodling at work. I like how it turned out so I figured I'd post it. I hope you like it too.
Speaking of drawing I'm planning on participating in the Countdown to Halloween this year. You will see 31 skulls, through October.  It'll be pretty cool.

Recently picked up a weird shaped sketchbook figured I'd fill it with pin-up drawings. Since ladies are fun to draw. this is the first of them. I'm pretty happy with the Raygun

Summoning the Beyond

A little pin-up inspired by my listening to Calabrese while doodling. I'm not sure if I'll ink and color this up like I've done with other pinups I've drawn. We'll see once I'm done with FanExpo next week. Check my previous Blog if you're going to Fan Expo and want to find me there.

Flux Capacitor Pin-up girl

I thought it would be funny to see a Flux Capacitor on one of those pin-up calendars where they have a pin-up girl next to a tool. Kinda based the girl on one of the Rigid Tool calendars Petty did. Figured 1985 would be the most appropriate year for the calendar (October 26th is highlighted for you nerds out there). I'll probably be selling prints of this at the Fan Expo.

The Bride of Calabrese listens to scary music.

You might have noticed I threw the pencils for this up yesterday. Well now its finished. I created this character for the band Calabrese as a kind of mascot for them way back when they asked me to do some art for their first big album: 13 Halloweens. Since that time I've had a pretty good time working with them on various projects and she's appeared in some form or another in the artwork for all the albums I've worked on for them.  Those are the covers for all of the Calabrese albums, I helped out on three of them.

Midnight Spook Show: I did nothing.
13 Halloweens: I did the cover art and a bunch of interior things. The Bride of Calabrese's first appearance, she's on the credit panel of the CD.
Travelling Vampire Show: I did some layout stuff on the cover and back cover, did a big centre spread of the vampire show on the inside (the bride is really small dancing in the front of the girly tent with some other freaks) and I did some artwork for the CD itself. Cover art was by one of my favorite artists Tom Bagley
Calabrese III: They Call us Death: I designed the title lettering and did some interior art and back cover art. Front cover was by another artist I admire, Eric Powell. The Bride is once again on the credit panel holding an axe and hanging out with the severed heads of the Brothers Calabrese.

The other Calabrese cover you see there is from their first comic appearance. Once again I helped out with some layout duties on the front cover. The Bride again appears on the inside credit page in a tribute to Frazetta and the inside back cover in a small role in a tribute to those sand getting kicked in your face ads you used to see in comics. She's fun to draw and I hope I get around to drawing her again.

More art?

Along time ago I created this little mascot character for the band Calabrese. I felt like doing a new pin-up of her. This here's the rough pencil version of it. I'll try and post a full color version of it when I finish it. I've got a few other drawings on the go. I'll post them at some point. might hold off on showing them until I've figured out what I'm going to do for Fan Expo this year. I've tried to book a table don't know when I'll know if I've got one. News regarding my going to Fan Expo will be found here when I know what's going on. Until then enjoy the drawing.

Monster Beach 2: in color!

And now here it is in color. I hope to have some more art to show soon. Keep your eyes peeled. I'm figuring there will be at least three more of these monster beach / the mask images.

Another pencil sketch of a piece I'm working on. Its the third in my inspired by "the Mask" series or the third of the Monster Beach series. Either way its another drawing of sexy girls and weird things so quit complaining. Other wise what do you think?

Hawt Girl

Hawt Girl is the resident superheroine spokesmodel for Comic Oasis in Las Vegas. She was also pretty fun to draw. She was designed by Charles Holbert Jr. I've drawn her as part of an art trade with Mr. Holbert Jr. I had a lot of fun drawing this so I figured I'd show you the stages this drawing took to be completed.


Step 1. Pencil Drawing

The first stage of drawing anything, at least for me involves using pencils. I tend to use colored pencils from colerase, this time I drew using tuscan red. I usually draw in purple or tuscan red. They seem to be the least smudgy. 

Step 2. Illustrator for inking
Sometimes I like to use markers or brush and ink when I do this stage of a drawing but I felt like having the line part of the drawing be colored too so I went with illustrator. Its easier to have colored ink lines when you start with colored ink lines instead of adapting them in photoshop.

Step 3. Drawing up the background
Since I felt like handling the background slightly differently than the foreground I drew the background in with a minimum of ink style line. You’ll notice there's a weird gap in the dead zombie nazi. You’ll also notice its the same shape as Hawt Girl’s leg. I figured I didn't need to draw what was behind the leg so I didn't.

Step 4. Coloring Hawt Girl
Even though I was planning on bringing the image into photoshop to do the shading and some touch ups, I decided to laydown the base colors in illustrator. I sort of like how it looks at this stage but I really wanted to give a little more form to Hawt Girl so ...

Step 5. PHOTOSHOP painting.
This is the stage where I bring it into Photoshop and paint in some shadows and highlights and stuff. I spent some time tweaking the contrast on some of the line work and stuff like that.

The Mask

The second pin-up I did featuring the mask from the 'classic' Canadian 3-D flick "THE MASK" (1961). If you've got 3-D glasses put 'em on to get the full effect of the image. It was fun to do so don't be surprised if I try doing this again in the not too distant future. 3–D is boss.

Since next weekend is the Fan-expo in toronto I've gotten to thinking about putting together and art/comic book for next year so that I can get a table at the con and sell some junk, this piece will probably be in that book. If I can figure out a cheapish way to print a full color art book.

Monster Beach final

Well here's the final version of the Monster Beach pinup I've been working on. It took a lot longer than I anticipated (or wanted to work on it) but its done and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I was playing around with the new photoshop (CS5) most of the coloring was done using the new painty type brushes. I'm not sure I found them behaving any different from the standard photoshop brush but they did give the piece  some interesting texture, in my opinion. Also since I had just thrown some new memory into my mac I wanted to see how big a file it could handle and so I was working on this at an insane size (60"x 60" 600dpi) and it seemed to be working fine for the most part I ended up changing that size (a more reasonable 22" wide 300dpi) about half way through.

I did the inks in illustrator. I've been enjoying using illustrator to ink recently. Sometimes it takes longer than just regular inking and scanning but it is definately less messy.
